LASIK with IntraLase has quickly become the procedure of choice for
most patients because they recover quickly and have fewer side
effects and complications than with other methods of vision
correction. In fact, most LASIK patients notice a significant
improvement in their vision soon after surgery. This laser vision
correction procedure removes tissue within the cornea to treat low
to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
The latest technological advance in laser vision correction is
“custom” LASIK surgery. Topeka and Manhattan patients who receive
“custom” LASIK, which also goes by various other proprietary names,
such as CustomVue™, receive ultimate care. Custom LASIK surgery
represents the next step in improving the outcome of laser vision
correction beyond the excellent results already attainable by
conventional means. This is possible because every eye and its
associated refractive errors are unique, much like one’s
fingerprint, and recent advancements in technology now allow us not
only to measure these unique refractive imperfections, but also to
accurately and predictably eliminate them.
At the heart of “custom” LASIK procedures is the aberrometer, such
as the VISX WaveScan™ wave-front measurement system. By adopting
technology originally developed for high-powered telescopes, your
LASIK surgeon can use these wave-front measurement devices to
identify and quantitate imperfections in the individual’s eye 25
times more precisely than the standard methods used for eyeglasses
and contact lenses. This information is then digitally transferred
to the excimer laser for the treatment, providing a new level of
precision and accuracy.
LASIK is the most common vision correction procedure world wide and
works well to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism. Recent advances in computer controlled laser technology
have optimized safety and vision results. Studies show that more
than 95% of nearsighted patients obtain 20/20 or better vision with
state-of-the-art LASIK.
PRK laser surgery has been performed for more than 20 years and
recent improvements in technique and technology have led to an
increase in its use. Approximately one-third of our patients have
PRK surgery to correct their nearsightedness, farsightedness or
astigmatism. The vision results are equally good using either LASIK
or PRK with most patients obtaining 20/20 or better.
Dr. Wellemeyer has practiced microsurgery in Wichita since 1993. He
is one of the few eye surgeons in the region trained to perform both
advanced lens microsurgery and corneal surgery including sutureless
cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, phakic lenses, corneal
transplantation, custom Intralase LASIK and custom PRK.
