LASIK Surgeon Antonio Prado

Lasik eye surgery remains the most popular laser vision correction procedure in the world. Its popularity can be credited to the level of success, safety, predictability, and rapid healing associated with the procedure. Millions of people now live without the need for glasses or contact lenses thanks to Lasik eye surgery. In Tampa, Prado Vision has performed thousands of Lasik procedures for people suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. We can also treat those over 40 who need reading glasses. Visit the informational NearVision(SM) CKĀ® page to learn about our ability to correct presbyopia without lasers!

Lasik surgery is performed under topical anesthesia, which is easily administered in the form of eye drops. During the procedure, Dr. Antonio Prado utilizes an automated microkeratome that precisely creates a thin, hinged flap in the cornea.

The flap is a crucial step in Lasik surgery because it allows access to the central portion of your cornea, which causes the refractive error. To correct this error, the cornea is reshaped by removing a microscopic layer of tissue using a computer-controlled laser beam. Once the necessary portion is removed, the flap is returned to its original position and naturally adheres for fast healing without stitches.

Custom laser vision correction, or Custom LASIK, is an exciting and advanced new technology that accounts for each patient's individual unique vision needs, resulting in the most successful vision correction possible. The three-step procedure is fully customized to your eyes, and offers a more precise and accurate correction of higher order aberrations, subtle focusing imperfections which compromise vision in low-light environments. Traditional laser vision correction only accounts for lower level aberrations, which contribute to blurry vision.

In the first step, your eyes' individual aberrations are captured and a highly accurate wavefront map is created. A computer then translates the map, which displays even tiny irregularities in the eyes, into a guide for an excimer laser. The process is completed when the laser reshapes each cornea.

Tampa Lasik Vision Correction

LASIK had its origins about thirty years ago and was originally developed to treat patients who had very poor vision due to corneal disease. It has now evolved into a successful technique for correcting refractive errors. The current procedure, done on an outpatient basis, involves both the use of conventional and laser surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK can correct a much higher degree of nearsightedness and farsightedness with or without astigmatism than any other refractive procedure, with excellent results (95% of patients achieve 20/40 vision or better).

In performing LASIK, eye drop anesthetic is used to numb the eye. David H. Leach, M.D., then uses the IntraLase Laser to create a flap. The flap is then laid back to expose the inner portion of the corneal tissue. The eye is then positioned under the Allegretto Wave Laser, which has been computer programmed to remove microscopic amounts of the internal corneal tissue.

Removal of the tissue changes the curvature of the cornea. If the patient is nearsighted, tissue closer to the central part of the cornea is removed to decrease the curvature or flatten the cornea. If a patient is farsighted, tissue in the peripheral part of the cornea is removed to increase the curvature of the cornea.

To correct for astigmatism, selected tissue at certain angles is removed to ensure that the cornea curves equally in all directions. After the laser has been used, the flap is returned to its original position. The corneal tissue has extraordinary natural bonding qualities that allow effective healing without the use of stitches.

The Weinstock Laser Eye Center

LASIK is a minor outpatient procedure that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and is intended to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses and contact lenses. During the procedure, Dr. Weinstock creates a flap from the outermost layer of the cornea. The flap is folded back revealing the middle section of the cornea. The cool beam of the excimer laser removes tissue and gently reshapes the cornea. The top layer of cornea is then replaced to serve as a protective flap.

For nearsighted or myopic patients, the cornea is too steep. The LASIK procedure removes cells from the central part of the cornea flattening it for clearer vision.

For farsighted or hyperopic patients, the cornea is too flat. The LASIK procedure removes cells in a spiral pattern around the outside of the cornea. This steepens the cornea and creates clearer vision.

There were several laser vision correction procedures being performed before LASIK, short for Laser in Situ Keratomileusis. Through the developmental stages of laser vision correction surgeons noticed certain side effects and limitations with the original procedures. As time went on, each procedure developed a more predictable result and faster recovery. LASIK embodies the positives of ALK, RK and PRK without the pain and long recovery periods.
