LASIK has an overwhelming success rate in reducing dependency on glasses and contact lenses. Although you cannot be guaranteed perfect vision, most patients with moderate prescriptions do achieve 20/20 vision or better. The best solution is to schedule a free eye exam with a LASIK Surgeon, which will help you decide if LASIK is right for you.

Please not that there is no way to guarantee 20/20 vision, as every individual is different. However, based on the most recent studies, the LASIK success rate is 100% for 20/30 (meaning you will be able to legally drive without glasses or contacts), 98% for 20/20, and 70% for better than 20/20 vision.

Most patients find the procedure to be pretty comfortable; to be honest, any discomfort will most likely come from the eyelid holders. The eyelid holder is the instrument that keeps the eye open during the procedure. A Topical Anesthetic drop is used to numb the eye before surgery. You will also be given a mild sedative to help relax you (and the pupil of your eye) before surgery.

Also, like any other medical procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort afterwards. Most patients are usually fine after taking a 4 hour nap. You will also have several drops that you can use to help relieve any irritations or dryness that you may experience after the procedure.

Fairfield County Laser Vision Correction

LASIK stands for "laser in-situ keratomileusis," or "laser within the cornea to reshape it." In LASIK, a special instrument called a microkeratome passes over the cornea and creates a thin, horizontal flap that remains attached on one edge. This flap is lifted and placed aside, and the laser is used to sculpt the cornea beneath the surface. The flap is then replaced and stays in place without stitches. There is less discomfort and a shorter recovery time after LASIK than after PRK because the inside of the cornea has a lower healing response than the surface.

After LASIK, the initial healing period is 12 to 24 hours. Typically, there is a minimal foreign body sensation over this period, but some patients have no discomfort at all. About 90% of patients have functional vision and are comfortable after one day. A good estimate of final vision occurs in about 2 weeks, but vision may continue to stabilize over a 3 month period.

Most people require eye drops for 5 - 7 days. After LASIK, most people can return to work a day or two after surgery. If you choose to have both eyes treated simultaneously, you should allow for extra time.

A bandage contact lens and eye drops are used until the surface heals. Since the eye responds to the loss of these surface cells with a strong healing response, there is some initial discomfort, redness, and swelling. The FDA has approved PRK for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism with the VISX™.excimer laser.

For PRK, there is an initial healing time of 3 to 5 days when there is usually some discomfort ranging from a foreign body sensation to significant soreness. Your eye will be more sensitive to light, and vision is usually foggy these first days.

You will be wearing a bandage contact lens and using drops that significantly help with discomfort. After 3 to 5 days, vision usually clears to a functional level and the bandage contact lens is removed. Maximum visual improvement may take 2 to 3 months, and sometimes more. During this time, you will be slowly decreasing the frequency of your eye drops.
