Michigan Lasik

LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is the most commonly performed and well known vision correction surgery. Using an excimer laser, the doctor re-shapes the cornea (the stationary refractive element at the front of the eye) so that images are focused to the correct spot on the retina (the light receptor of the eye). The success rate with this procedure is excellent, with most patients achieving 20/20 vision or better upon completion.

LASIK is a completely different treatment in fundamental ways. Ziemer's FEMTO LDV is not just another femtosecond laser, similar to Intralase, Femtec, or Zeiss. Compared to these conventional femtolasers, the FEMTO LDV operates at pulse rates that are orders of magnitude higher, pulse energies that are much lower, and delivery optics that are very tightly focused for maximum tissue disruption in the focal spot and no thermal or radiation effects to the surrounding tissue. Unlike other femtolaser-based treatments, Z-LASIK is a highly integrated procedure, giving surgical teams a time-efficient workflow.

NearVision CK uses radio waves, instead of a laser or scalpel, to reshape the cornea and bring near vision back into focus.NearVision CK is performed using a small probe, thinner than a strand of human hair, that releases radio waves. The probe is applied in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of collagen. This circular shrinkage pattern creates a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt), increasing the overall curvature of the cornea. The procedure, which takes less than three minutes, is done in-office with only topical anesthesia (eye drops).

Dr. Jeffrey S. Rohr is the Medical Director and Chief Surgeon of the Rohr Eye & Laser Center. Each of the staff members has been handpicked and personally trained by Dr. Rohr to provide optimum patient care. For LASIK surgery, Dr. Rohr uses the most advanced wavefront guided excimer laser technology for "Personalized Laser Vision," the Zyoptix 217 Z flying spot excimer laser technology from Bausch and Lomb. This system provides a precise measurement of the corneal curvature and then creates a customized and individualized laser ablation profile to reshape the cornea. In addition to LASIK, Dr. Rohr also offers LASEK, PRK, AK, and CK (conductive keratoplasty to correct presbyopia) surgery to reshape the cornea and correct vision. Dr. Rohr also provides state-of-the-art gentle no-stitch, no-needle cataract surgery during which he inserts the most advanced multifocal IOL (intraocular lens) that simultaneously corrects for both near and distance vision.

Millman-Derr Center for Eye Care

LASIK is the most commonly performed surgery for refractive errors. The procedure takes between 10 and 15 minutes for both eyes. It can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. As in radial keratotomy, the cornea is reshaped to correct the refractive error.

Healing occurs rapidly and stitches are not needed. Postoperative care varies from practice to practice. For example, some surgeons may cover the eyes with clear shields to protect them, while others find it unnecessary. The eyes should be rested the day of surgery and rubbing them should be avoided for a few days. Engaging in contact sports should be avoided for a couple of weeks and swimming for about a month.

Ocular or eye specialists are independent primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures. They can prescribe eye medications and fit and dispense glasses and contact lenses for all members of a family. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) who manages the complete medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system. An optometrist (O.D.) is responsible for diagnosing eye conditions and vision problems and prescribing necessary medications, eyeglasses or contacts lenses. An optician makes, verifies and delivers lenses, frames and or contact lenses upon prescription.

Dr. Derr received the doctor of medicine degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1969. He completed his medical internship at Harper Hospital in 1970 and his residency in ophthalmology at Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in 1973. He specializes in cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, LASIK vision correction surgery, laser surgery for glaucoma as well as for diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases and myopia surgery.

Adelson Eye & Laser Center

LASIK, or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis, offers a number of benefits over other forms of laser vision correction because it is performed under a protective layer of corneal tissue. As a result, there is less risk of corneal haze, less postoperative discomfort, less post-operative need for medications, and vision returns more rapidly, often within a few days or so. LASIK can also treat a higher range of vision errors. Although postoperative results vary, most patients are able to pass a drivers' license test without their glasses or contacts.

The decision to have LASIK is an important one that, ultimately, only you can make. It is important that you have realistic expectations and that your decision is based on facts, not hopes or misconceptions. The goal of LASIK is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. LASIK does not always create 20/20 vision, and it cannot correct presbyopia, or aging of the eye. This normally occurs around the age of 40 and may require the use of reading glasses. In fact, people over 40 who have their distance vision improved with LASIK may find the need for reading glasses after the procedure. Dr. Adelson will be happy to provide you with additional information that will allow you to make an informed decision.

Dr. Adelson is a pioneer in laser vision correction. He was one of the first doctors in the state of Michigan to perform the now-popular Custom Lasik, utilizing the VISX STAR S4 laser and allowing up to 25 times better visual results over traditional Lasik. In fact, over 98% of Dr. Adelson’s patients are able to pass a driver’s exam after their procedure. Dr. Adelson has been featured on Fox News live, WGVU AM radio in Grand Rapids, MI and 95.5 FM radio with MOJO in the morning. Dr. Adelson has been a national guest lecturer for ophthalmologist helping to teach refractive surgery. Further, Dr. Adelson is a resident educator at Michigan State University and was one of the first surgeons in the United States to be certified on the new implantable contact lens by Starr Surgical.
