LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is the most common of a group of surgical procedures collectively referred to as refractive surgery. These procedures are designed to improve the eye’s ability to focus images on the retina, which in turn transmits the images to the brain. However, the cornea - the front portion of the eye responsible for refracting light onto the retina - is not always perfectly shaped to do so. This can cause various forms of blurred or distorted vision, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (blurred peripheral vision). LASIK surgery has been found to be an effective treatment for all three disorders.

The process of LASIK surgery is accomplished in a few short steps. A local anesthetic is first applied to the eye(s). A thin flap is then carefully created on the surface of the cornea, using a highly precise instrument called IntraLase®. The flap is pulled back, revealing the middle section of the cornea. A cool ultraviolet light beam, produced by our VISX S4™ laser, is then applied, removing tiny portions of the cornea in an effort to reshape it and improve visual acuity. Each pulse of the laser removes approximately .25 microns of corneal tissue. By comparison, the diameter of a human hair is about 50 microns.

Because the laser used in LASIK surgery removes corneal matter in such small increments, extreme precision is achieved in the process. Once the cornea is corrected, the flap is replaced and the procedure is complete.

Following LASIK surgery, patients usually experience a rapid recovery due to the fact that only a tiny portion of the eye is actually operated on. Most of our patients are able to drive themselves back to our facility the day following their surgery to meet with Dr. Cohen for their follow-up appointment. Because of its efficiency and effectiveness, LASIK surgery is the most popular form of refractive surgery. It is estimated to account for 95 percent of the laser vision correction procedures that are performed today.

Eye Surgeons of the Palm Beaches

LASIK is a laser surgical procedure designed for the correction of nearsightedness, astigmatism, and hyperopia. It is intended to reduce or eliminate one's dependence on eye glasses. The success of the procedure has been excellent. Imagine being able to work, drive, read the clock, play sports, do anything that you wish without having to wear eye glasses or contacts!

In LASIK, a very precise instrument called a 'microkeratome' is used to gently fold back a hinged flap (a) of the corneal surface (which stays attached to the rest of the cornea on one side) exposing the underlying tissue. The excimer laser treatment (b) is then applied to the bed under the flap. The protective flap (c) of the cornea is then immediately returned to its original position, and the flap assumes the new corneal curvature, thus correcting the refractive error. The flap seals itself (self bonds) naturally in about 12 hours. Since LASIK does not remove the surface corneal layer (epithelium), much less post-operative discomfort (scratchy feeling for 2-6 hrs) is experienced. Most patients enjoy improved vision the day following their procedure.

See what you have been missing in the blink of an eye! If your view is distorted by glasses or contact lenses, LASIK Laser Vision Correction may be for you. Don´t let nearsightedness , farsightedness and/or astigmatism keep you from enjoying life to the fullest. Would you like to be more active in water sports, football, baseball, ice hockey, racquetball, tennis, golf , or any other sports? If you wish to reduce your dependence on eye glasses and contact lenses for your daily activities, then you have the proper reason for undergoing laser refractive surgery such as LASIK. The FIRST STEP to determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction, is by making an appointment with Eye Surgeons of the Palm Beaches for a FREE personal consultation with Alan N. Kohn, M.D., FACS. During your visit, you will be thoroughly examined and informed on laser vision correction options and have all your questions answered.

LASIK utilizes the precision of an excimer laser in order to permanently modify the cornea's curvature so that light rays can focus properly onto the retina.

After numbing the eye with topical anesthetic eye drops, Dr. Bentz uses a special surgical device called a microkeratome to create a thin, hinged flap on the cornea's surface. He gently folds this flap back to expose the inner corneal tissue. A computer-controlled excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea's surface, correcting the curvature irregularities that cause refractive errors. After the cornea's curvature has been modified, the flap is returned to its original position. No stitches are needed as the corneal flap naturally re-adheres in about 24 hours. LASIK is a quick and painless procedure, requiring less than 15 minutes from start to finish.

Most patients report significant improvement in vision immediately following LASIK surgery. Vision continues to improve over the next few days with final results achieved within six months. The majority of patients resume work and normal activities the very next day.

While an overwhelming majority of patients achieve significant improvement in visual acuity with conventional LASIK, the procedure does have its limitations. The diagnostic technology used in conventional LASIK is limited to the detection of refractive errors only. Refractive errors, also known as low order aberrations, cause farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. However, there is another class of visual problems called high order aberrations that cannot be treated with conventional LASIK. High order aberrations affect the quality of your vision and are responsible for problems such as subtle focusing inabilities and diminished contrast sensitivity.

High order aberrations can only be diagnosed using a wavefront mapping device, an advanced technology that creates a precise digital map of your cornea and optical path. A wavefront mapping device works by bouncing light off the eye and measuring the reflected wavelengths. These measurements are transferred to a computer screen to generate a detailed digital map of your eye. Dr. Bentz analyzes the data from the computer image and designs a completely customized surgical plan that addresses all of your vision problems.
