Ophthalmology and Laser Eye Surgery
Epi-LASIK (Epithelial Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser
vision correction procedure performed for patients who may not be
good candidates for traditional LASIK. People who qualify for
Epi-LASIK may have thin corneas, dry eyes, or other conditions.
During the Epi-LASIK procedure, the epithelium (the thin outer layer
covering the cornea) is lifted with a non-cutting instrument. The
cornea is then reshaped with a laser as it would be during a normal
LASIK procedure. Though the visual recovery time is generally slower
than traditional LASIK, the visual outcome is the same.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted Stromal In-situ Keratomileusis) is a popular
refractive surgery procedure used to treat patients suffering from
myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and
astigmatism. The procedure is a combination of keratomileusis, which
involves cutting of the cornea, and Excimer laser photoablation,
which uses a laser to reshape the surface of the eye. The cool
ultraviolet beam of the laser delivers a preprogrammed number of
pulses to correct and reshape the exposed surface of the eye. The
corneal flap is then put back into place where it heals without the
need for stitches.
Wavefront™ was originally designed for use in astrophysics to help
detect and reduce visual aberrations in telescope lenses. When used
in laser vision correction, Wavefront™ analyzes how light waves
travel through your eyes, mapping out the distortions and
imperfections unique to your vision. This 3D map is then saved. The
computer-guided Excimer laser will correct the surface of your eyes
based on the information on the 3D map. Since your own unique visual
distortions are accurately assessed and precisely corrected, the
possibility of achieving 20/20 vision or better is increased.
Ocala Eye offers CustomVue™ custom LASIK and Epi-LASIK at our
surgery center in Ocala, Florida. CustomVue™ uses Wavefront™
technology to precisely map the individual differences in each eye.
The Wavefront™ scan is 25 times more accurate than standard methods
used for glasses and contacts. An Excimer laser then reshapes the
cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

The procedure for lasik (Laser In-situ Keratomileusis) surgery takes
only moments and the results are almost immediate! The eyeball is
numbed with an "eye drop" anesthesia, and an instrument called a
microkeratome folds back a thin flap of corneal tissue. A cool beam
of light from the Excimer laser then removes a predetermined amount
of tissue from the inner cornea to correct the patient's refractive
error. The corneal flap is placed back in its original position
where it bonds without need for stitches. Most lasik patients have
functional vision within 12 to 24 hours and full visual results
usually take one to four weeks (results and healing times vary with
each individual). 95-98% of patients have 20/40 vision within 12-24
hours! The surgery is done right at Central Florida Eye Institute
and a follow-up visit is scheduled for the next day.
Dr. Croley has been involved with the Excimer laser since 1989 and
is the area's leader in laser vision correction since 1994. He has
had vast comprehensive training throughout the United States and
Europe and uses the latest technology and optimal care in performing
Lasik and Surface Oblation (PRK).
The Excimer lasers Dr. Croley has are Bausch & Lomb and Summit
Technology. These lasers are owned and operated solely by Dr. Croley.
Your treatment and follow-up care is done at Central Florida Eye
Institute. Because the Excimer is such a precise instrument, it is
never handled by another doctor or technician, nor is it moved from
our location. This ensures the most accurate calibration of the
Laser.
There are several different laser vision correction procedures
available: LASIK, LASEK, Custom Cornea, Wavefront, and Surface
Oblation. Here at Central Florida Eye Institute we will be happy to
go over any and all procedures that may be appropriate for you
during your free initial evaluation.
The decision to have Laser Correction is an important one. Dr.
Croley believes that all individuals considering this procedure
should be completely educated on it prior to having it done. Central
Florida Eye Institute offers free screenings so you may gain
valuable information as it relates specifically to you. You are also
able to meet the qualified staff and see the facility before your
laser procedure.
