Laser Vision Correction

Dr. Singer has performed thousands of laser vision correction procedures on four different lasers and now exclusively uses the VISX Star S4 laser to perform all LASIK procedures. This Excimer laser was the first in the United States to receive approval from the FDA for the treatment of low, moderate and high myopia, low to moderate ranges of hyperopia and astigmatism. The VISX Star S4 currently offers the widest range of correction available today for the treatment of these conditions. Current treatment options range up to -14.00 diopters of nearsightedness to +6.00 diopters of farsightedness and up to 5.00 diopters of astigmatism. The VISX Star S4 ActiveTrackTM Excimer Laser System actively tracks the horizontal, vertical and up and down motion of the eye in real time. This allows for extra safety and precision during the LASIK procedure by verifying the correct position of your eye before every laser pulse. With the ActiveTrak system, no pre-imaging or dilation is required and this allows full control of centration and engagement.

As with any surgical procedure, there are associated risks. Although rare, they can occur and that is why it is important to meet with your surgeon before you schedule your LASIK procedure. During this meeting you will not only learn if you are a candidate, but Dr. Singer will explain the benefits and risks of laser vision correction.

Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness, is estimated to affect 1 of every 50 adults. Although glaucoma can occur at any age, the risk of developing the disease increases dramatically after the age of 35. Glaucoma is also more likely to develop in persons who are severely nearsighted, persons with a family history of the condition, diabetics and blacks. Because the symptoms of early glaucoma are so slight, the disease often goes unnoticed until permanent vision has occurred. However, with early diagnostics and careful treatment, visual damage from glaucoma can be prevented.

Leoni Eye Clinic

LASIK eye surgery is a procedure that is performed with the intention to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses and contact lenses. During surgery, the shape of the cornea is changed to attain clearer vision. In general, patients are able to achieve 20/40 vision or better after undergoing laser eye surgery.

LASIK surgery offers many benefits to patients including improved vision quality and a reduced or eliminated need for glasses or contacts. Additionally since the dependence on contacts is reduced patients are able eliminate the discomfort from prolonged use of contact lenses. LASIK patients are able to broaden their social, recreational and career opportunities since outdoor recreational activities and dimly lit social settings are more enjoyable without corrective eyewear.

Some patients may not be good candidates for LASIK because their cornea is too flat or thin. Patients with this condition can undergo LASEK, an alternative vision correction treatment similar to LASIK. Although both procedures treat the corneal tissue beneath a flap made in the outer layer, with LASEK the flap is thinner. Only the exterior of the cornea, the epithelium, is used to create the hinged flap. After the underlying corneal tissue is exposed, the treatment proceeds as it would with LASIK. An excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea, and the flap is replaced.

PRK is an effective laser eye surgery treatment offered at our Shreveport area office. This treatment offers gradual vision improvement over the duration of days or months. It is generally recommended for patients with large pupils or thin corneas, and is similar to LASEK in that the hinged flap is created using just the epithelium. The PRK procedure then involves use of an excimer laser to reshape the cornea through accurate removal of corneal tissue. This improves the eye’s ability to focus light on the retina, producing better visual acuity. PRK was the first excimer laser procedure available. Shreveport area residents now have many options available to them such as LASIK – an extremely popular procedure due to faster results and recovery time. PRK is offered to our Shreveport area patients who are not good candidates for LASIK.

The Custom LASIK system creates accurate measurements of the eye using Wavefront™ technology. Recording both lower and higher order aberrations, this data is transferred to a program that produces a map of imperfections in your eyes. The topography of each eye is like a fingerprint – all are one of a kind. With Custom LASIK, the unique condition of your eye is illustrated within an individualized blueprint that is digitally transported to the laser used to reshape your cornea. This state-of-the-art technology used at our Shreveport/Bossier City area office guides the LASIK surgeon throughout the procedure. Custom LASIK Wavefront™ technology provides patients with the greatest level of precision and accuracy.
