Suven Bhattacharjee secured the 8th rank in the All India Entrance
examination to the prestigious JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of
Postgraduate Medical Education & Research), Pondicherry , in 1983.
JIPMER is a premier medical college and referral centre, earlier
under Directorate General of Health Services, India and now
autonomous and is known to have given the world of medicine some of
the finest Doctors. Dr. Bhattacharjee completed his graduation (MBBS)
& Post Graduation (MS Ophthalmology, Gold Medallist) at JIPMER. He
is a Diplomate of the National Board (DNB Ophthal) from the National
Board of Examinations, New Delhi. He has done his Fellowship in
Vitreo Retinal Surgery under the Internationally renowned Retinal
Surgeon, Dr. P N Nagpal at the Retina Foundation.
Dr. Bhattacharjee is equally trained and has keen interest in both
Anterior Segment surgery (front of the eye that deals with Cataract
, LASIK & Glaucoma) & Posterior Segment Surgery (back of the eye
that deals with Retina & Vitreous).

Welcome to Disha Eye Hospital
Disha Eye Hospitals, a Private Limited Companionship of Four doctor
friends began on the 1st of May 1997 in the small town of
Barrackpore to attend desperation for quality eye care respecting
everyone's ability to pay. So overwhelming was the Common Man’s
Pride, to buy quality eye care
But it wasn’t easy in the suburbs. Everybody used to flock to the
city for treatment. Spectacle shops were the only centers of
eye-care in the periphery. DB attended quite a few of them! But then
came IOL and Microsurgery and Dr. Debasish started implanting very
early (1988). This changed everything. He had his own clinic in the
ground floor of his home in 1989. By 1993, DB was doing 1200
surgeries and seeing 20,000 patients every year. Other juniors would
come and maximize him in his practice. Dr. Tushar Hazra, his one
year junior college friend and Dr.Samar Basak, two year junior to
him in college were among them. They were the best at that time. He
continuosly persuaded them to leave their jobs so that they could
have a hospital, but the security of the government job was a cobweb
which deferred their decision. Dr. Tushar joined DB in 1996 and Dr.
Basak followed in 1997.
So Disha Eye Hospitals, a Private Limited Companionship of three
doctor friends from the same medical college (NRS Medical College)
was formed on 1st May 1997 with Dr. DB as the major share holder and
Dr.Hazra and Dr. Basak having sweat equities. Dr. DB left his
handsome practice (2500 operations per year) and Dr. Hazra and Dr.
Basak their teaching jobs in Medical Colleges and worked whole time
for the hospital for a salary of Rs 10,000 per month.
This is the most researched department of our hospital. Though LASIK
could give freedom from spectacles’ it was not a Spectacle for us.
We knew were dealing with the most valuable productive young eyes.
So we closely watched all results internationally, went to centres
individually followed their patients till we were totally convinced.
It took us 6 long years from 2001 to 2007. Chairman Dr. DB had only
one message don’t negotiate the price but just get the best
technology. So we got the Wavelight Allegreto AG (German) technology
the fastest Excimer Lasik laser with the most efficient Radar Eye
tracking system. A pentacam (occulyzer) to screen out risk cases.
