One of the most popular ways to correct vision is with a procedure
called Lasik surgery. LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) uses a
laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the
eye). Lasik surgery has quickly become the procedure of choice for
most patients. Lasik surgery is proven to have fewer side effects, a
quick recovery period, and less complication than other methods of
vision correction. In fact, most Lasik surgery patients notice a
significant improvement in their vision soon after Lasik surgery.
Lasik surgery removes tissue within the cornea to treat low to high
levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
The IntraLase® laser provides a less invasive, computer controlled
approach to the important first step of the laser vision correction
procedure. This step, traditionally performed with a surgical blade,
has now been enhanced by the laser’s micron level accuracy, making
every procedure more predictable. This remarkable precision,
provided by IntraLase technology, enables you to choose laser vision
correction with confidence. By replacing the traditional approach
with a silent, tiny beam of laser light, the IntraLase FS laser
allows more patients to become candidates for laser vision
correction due to this unique level of precision that was previously
unavailable.
David M. Schneider, M.D. is the founding Lasik eye surgeon of the
MidWest EyeCenter. Currently licensed in Ohio, California, Kentucky
and Hawaii, Dr. Schneider is board-certified by the American Board
of Ophthalmology. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the
University of California in 1968 and his medical degree from the
University of Cincinnati in 1975. Following graduation from medical
school, Dr. Schneider completed his internship, residency training
and fellowship program in ophthalmology. Current memberships include
the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the American Association of
Ophthalmology, the Ohio State Medical Association, the International
Society of Refractive Keratoplasty, the American Society of Cataract
and Refractive Surgeons, the Society for Excellence in Eye Care
(SEE) and the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society.

LASIK or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis corrects vision by reshaping
the corneal tissue beneath the surface of the cornea rather than on
the surface. LASIK combines the accuracy of the Allegretto Wave
Laser with the healing benefits of a surgical procedure called
Lamellar Keratoplasty, performed on a limited basis since 1949, to
treat higher levels of nearsightedness and moderate amounts of
farsightedness.
During this process, you may feel a little pressure, but no
discomfort. You will be asked to look directly at a target light
while the laser reshapes the cornea. The cornea is made flatter to
treat nearsightedness, steeper to treat farsightedness and more
spherical to treat astigmatism. Next, the protective flap is folded
back in place where it bonds without the need for stitches.
Because LASIK is performed under a protective layer of tissue, there
is less surface area to heal, less risk of corneal haze, less
postoperative discomfort, less need for postoperative medication and
vision returns more rapidly, often within a day or two. LASIK can
also treat a higher range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism.
Dr. John Halpin, Board Certified Ophthalmologist, is a native to the
Tri-State. He has been practicing as an eye doctor in the Cincinnati
area for more than 29 years. Dr. Halpin first attended the
University of Kentucky where he earned his B.S. in 1959.
In 1972, realizing his true calling in ophthalmology, Dr. Halpin
began his ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota. Since 1975, Dr. John Halpin has been recognized as one of
the leading eye doctors in the Cincinnati tri-state area. Dr. Halpin
has professional affiliations with The American Academy of
Ophthalmology, Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgical Society, American
Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Kentucky
Medical Association, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, Northern
Kentucky Medical Society, and the Cincinnati Society of
Ophthalmology. Dr. Halpin provides general eye exams as well as

As we chase perfection in laser vision correction, it is our
uncompromising position to only offer the very best laser
technology. The Bausch and Lomb Technolas 217z, with orbscan and
zywave aberrometry, combine to provide the very best wavefront
customized Lasik. Based on the study completed for FDA approval,
99.7% of eyes achieved 20/40 vision or better without glasses, and
91.5% of eyes achieved 20/20 vision or better. With this laser, many
of the night vision problems patients encountered with traditional
Lasik have been solved.
In the past, and still in many practices today, a metal blade is
used to mechanically cut a thin layer of corneal tissue to create a
flap. The flap would be folded over and the laser would be applied
to the remaining cornea. This is one of the main causes for
intra-operative complications, and although incredibly rare, can be
problematic. Engineers in the US and in Germany saw a way to improve
the safety and reliability of this portion of the procedure using a
laser. Now, more than 50% of all LASIK procedures performed are done
with a femtosecond laser to create the flap, rather than a metal
blade. Bluegrass Eye Surgery is the region’s only all laser Lasik
facility and we pride ourselves on that commitment to safety.
We also offer a procedure called LASEK (Laser Assisted
Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis). This procedure allows patients with
thin corneas to safely have laser refractive surgery, without the
concern of long term complications. During your evaluation, we will
let you know which type of procedure you would qualify for.
Dr. Wortz has excelled professionally as well. He graduated with
honors from medical school at the University of Louisville and was
then accepted to the University of Kentucky, one of the top
surgically-oriented ophthalmology residencies in the country. During
his residency, he achieved excellence in clinical and surgical skill
and was chosen by the faculty to represent the department as the
Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. As the Chief Resident, Dr. Wortz
submitted a videotape of one of his most challenging and successful
cataract operations to the national cataract competition through the
American College of Eye Surgeons. Each videotaped surgery was
thoroughly reviewed and scored by the top eye surgeons in the
country. After all the entries were scored, Dr. Wortz was chosen as
the national award winner. He is the first and only resident from
the University of Kentucky to win this award.
