LASIK surgery, Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is an outpatient laser vision correction procedure intended to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective lenses by altering the shape of the cornea. The cornea is responsible for focusing light to create an image on the retina, called refraction. An imperfect cornea causes distorted vision, or refractive error, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Custom LASIK eye surgery can correct these refractive errors and reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses and contacts. Dr. Earl Lanter has performed LASIK surgery for thousands of satisfied patients in Indiana. In addition to performing LASIK in Indianapolis, Dr. Lanter now provides custom LASIK treatment in Carlsbad, California, in Northern San Diego County.

LASIK surgery has helped millions of people with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism realize their dreams of better vision and life without glasses. An average of 98 percent of laser vision correction patients enjoy 20/40 vision or better after the procedure, the level required to legally drive without corrective lenses. With proper care, the healing process is relatively painless and extremely short, allowing most to drive and return to work the very next day. By eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses, LASIK surgery offers our San Diego and Indianapolis patients the freedom to pursue hobbies, sports, and career options without the hassle of corrective lenses. The obvious benefit of LASIK eye surgery is simply clear vision.

Earl E. Lanter OD, MD graduated from Indiana University with Distinction in 1977 and received a Doctor of Optometry degree with High Distinction in 1979. Dr. Lanter gained invaluable clinical experience as an optometrist for a year and then pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree, graduating with Highest Distinction in 1984. Upon completion of his specialty training, he started his private practice in Indianapolis in 1988. In 1992, Dr. Earl Lanter was one of the first doctors in the United States to perform Instant Vision cataract surgery without shots, stitches or patches. This procedure allowed many to see at a distance almost immediately without glasses or contacts. These remarkable results spurred Dr. Lanter’s interest in refractive surgery, which would allow him to provide thousands with great vision. Dr. Earl Lanter trained with the leading experts in refractive surgery, traveling the world to bring home the latest in technology and surgical procedures.

Mishawaka Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK combines the skill of the refractive surgeon with the advanced technology of the excimer laser. During LASIK, the surgeon uses an instrument known as a microkeratome to create a small flap from the outer layers of the cornea. A "hinge" is left in the flap so the flap can be laid back on the surface of the cornea. The excimer laser then uses cool ultra-violet light pulses to gently re-shape the underlying microscopic layers of corneal tissue. Finally, the flap is put back to its original position where it functions as a natural bandage on the cornea.

The actual procedure takes only minutes to perform. LASIK is virtually painless although a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops are generally used. Patients can usually see quite well immediately after the surgery and frequently resume normal activities within a short period of time. The Eye Center of Southern Indiana

Laser vision correction uses cool pulses of ultraviolet light to remove a very small amount of tissue from the cornea at the front of the eye. This corrects the abnormal curve of the cornea and allows light to properly focus on the retina. The result is clear distance vision.

LASIK stands for “Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis”. It is a laser vision correction procedure that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the curvature of the cornea. The procedure involves creating a very precise, thin flap of the corneal tissue utilizing the Intralase system. The flap is folded back, and the laser’s cool beam of ultraviolet light removes a small amount of tissue, usually less than the thickness of a human hair. After the precise amount of tissue is removed, the flap is replaced. The actual laser treatment takes 15 to 60 seconds, based on the degree of correction necessary.

Your procedure will take place at The Eye Center of Southern Indiana in Bloomington. The outpatient procedure is performed without your having to change into surgical attire. Upon arrival you will receive an oral sedative to alleviate any anxiety. Your eye will be thoroughly cleaned. Topical eye drops will be used to numb the eye prior to your entrance into the laser suite. The procedure takes three minutes per eye. After the procedure patients stay in the post-operative room for 20 to 30 minutes. Please plan on being at The Eye Center for about 2 to 3 hours. You will need a driver to take you home.
