Laser vision correction is a short outpatient vision correction
procedure performed by certified ophthalmologists in which tissue is
removed from the surface of the eye using an excimer laser. Laser
vision correction is designed to reduce or eliminate a person's
dependency on glasses or contact lenses by reshaping the outer
surface of the cornea using the energy pulses of light emitted by
the excimer laser. There are currently two types of laser vision
correction procedures: LASIK and the newest LASEK-PRK (Laser
Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis).
LASIK or "Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis" is a procedure
which uses an excimer laser system to reshape the stroma layer lying
under the surface of the cornea.
An automated microsurgical device called a microkeratome is used to
create a thin flap on the surface of the cornea. The corneal flap is
then laid back and the excimer laser reshapes the stromal layers of
the cornea according to the patient's eye prescription. Once the
laser has been applied the flap is closed and the laser procedure is
complete. Similar to PRK, the procedure usually takes between 10 to
15 minutes, with the actual excimer laser treatment taking 15-90
seconds to perform.
Unlike with PRK, the surface layer of the cornea remains intact and
as a result, no bandage is required and LASIK patients experience
virtually no pain or discomfort. Most LASIK patients can normally
see well enough to drive a car the next day and healing is achieved
within one to three months.

EyeSight Hawaii
All LASIK surgeries are done by corneal specialist John Olkowski, MD
at our award winning laser center in our Honolulu office. Both Dr.
Olkowski and Dr. Louie are available for complimentary LASIK
consultations for people interested in Laser Vision Correction. At
no cost and with no obligation, you can come find out if you are a
candidate for LASIK or PRK. We invite you to come meet our EyeSight
Hawaii staff, see our office and laser center and speak directly
with our doctors about your Laser Vision Correction options.
LASIK pre-operative examinations are every bit as important as the
surgery itself. It is during this exam that all of the information
that is used for surgery is generated. It will include measuring
corneal thickness and pupil size, as well as, dilating the pupils to
examine the retina. EyeSight Hawaii performs VISX WaveScan
measurements before every LASIK procedure.
The VISX WaveScan maps your entire visual system in an extremely
advanced way that was never before possible and creates a
"Fingerprint of your vision".
LASIK surgery first involves folding back a thin layer of the
surface of the cornea (front surface of the eye). Then the VISX Star
S4 IR excimer laser is used to gently and precisely reshape the
remaining cornea.
EyeSight Hawaii uses the most advanced blade-free IntraLase Method
to create the corneal flap. Ultra–fast pulses of laser light
position microscopic bubbles at a precise depth determined by Dr.
Olkowski. The laser light passes harmlessly through your cornea.
Then the laser creates rows of these bubbles just beneath your
corneal surface as it moves back and forth across your eye in a
uniform plane. Next, the IntraLase laser stacks bubbles around your
corneal diameter to create the edges of your flap. These bubbles are
stacked at an angle that is determined by Dr. Olkowski and is
individualized to the way your eye is shaped.
For the vision correction portion of the surgery, EyeSight Hawaii
uses the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser which has the only
FDA-approved 3-Dimensional tracking system. So there is no need to
worry if your eye moves because the laser will follow. After the
laser treatment, the thin corneal flap is then put back into place.
