LASIK has become the most popular and successful vision correction procedure worldwide. LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgery permanently changes the shape of the cornea. It can markedly decrease the dependency on glasses or contact lenses for many patients. Every cornea has it’s own fingerprint that makes it different than any other cornea in the world. With Wavefront-Guided CustomCornea treatment using the LADARvision excimer laser, we can treat each corneal fingerprint differently. Results are usually much better than standard excimer laser treatments, giving better un-corrected vision postoperatively. Dr. Stanley Braverman has performed thousands of LASIK Vision Correction Procedures on South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami LASIK patients. We now have a LADARvision excimer laser in our office and do the LASIK procedure in our own operating room at the Braverman Eye Center.

The surgery is performed on the cornea (It provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye) using a topical anesthetic (drops in the eye). The procedure involves folding back a thin layer of corneal tissue (corneal flap) with a microkeratome (a surgical instrument much like a carpenter's plane). Once the flap has been made and folded back, a thin layer of internal corneal tissue is removed with an Excimer laser. Unlike most lasers that produce heat, an Excimer laser removes tissue with little thermal damage or scarring to adjacent tissue. For this reason, it is an excellent device to reshape the cornea (the clear membrane on the front of the eye).

The surgeons of Braverman Eye Center have treated many South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami cataract surgery patients. In addition to treating cataracts patients, Braverman Eye Center surgeons have also been the choice of those who seek other surgical and medical treatment of eye diseases and laser vision correction. We are experts in cataract and corneal surgery, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Eye Lid and Orbital Surgery, Laser Vision Correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness and Astigmatism, Permanent Eye Liner, and treatment for Dry Eyes, Retinal Detachment and Vitreous Surgery and Neuro-ophthalmology.

Bladeless LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK has been the most widely performed and accepted form of laser eye surgery since it completed U.S. clinical trials in 1991. The term LASIK stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, which means, “to reshape the cornea, from within, using a laser.”

During LASIK surgery, a flap is first created in the cornea. Then, a laser beam works within the cornea to reshape it for vision correction. After the reshaping, the flap is put back into place and serves as a sort of natural bandage.

The wavefront devise creates a “map” of your eyes that goes beyond traditional vision testing. It works by passing a narrow ray of eye-safe light through the optical system and measuring the optical distortions as the light exits the eye. The map reflects your eye’s vision problems compared to a perfect eye’s wavefront map, which is flat. An eye that requires vision correction has a map that shows irregularities. The map is sent to the laser system, which aligns it exactly to match your eye. The computer uses these actual specific attributes of your eye to guide the laser beam that reshapes your cornea. Not all doctors are equipped to offer truly wavefront-guided LASIK. At Las Olas Laser Eye Center we have 2 custom wavefront systems . The VISX Star 4 eximer laser with CustomVue® and the LADARVision ® laser with LADARwave Custom Cornea Wavefront ® Anaysis Technology.

On the day of your procedure, you should arrive at the Center as rested and relaxed as possible, and should allot approximately two to three hours for the entire process. You will first go through a complete preparation process including counseling, possible repeat testing and the administration of anesthetic eye drops. After this, you will enter the laser suite for treatment, which will last only a few minutes.

Lasik Surgery Miami

A lot of people have had successful LASIK, but as many as 10 times that number are good candidates that are waiting. Some people are waiting because they don't think they can afford it. Others are unaware of the true safety of the procedure. But most people are waiting simply because they lack the right information.

LASEK is a relatively new laser vision procedure that combines elements of PRK and LASIK, and may offer some advantages over both. Instead of removing the epithelium (the thin layer of protective skin that covers the cornea) like in PRK, a flap of surface epithelium is loosened with a diluted alcohol solution and moved aside. The surface under the epithelium is then treated with the laser and the epithelial flap is returned to its original position. Using the epithelium flap as a natural protective bandage with LASEK, as opposed to completely removing the epithelium as with PRK, may improve healing and the incidence of postoperative haze.

The margin of safety with LASEK may be greater than that with LASIK as the need for a microkeratome is eliminated, so there's no risk of flap complications. You will arrive at the laser center about an hour prior to your procedure. Once you have been checked-in and settled comfortably, you will be prepared for surgery. The area around your eyes will be cleaned and a sterile drape will be applied. You may be given a sedative to help you relax. Eye drops will be used to numb your eyes; no injections or needles are used. When your eye is completely numb, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to keep you from blinking.
