LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most common
vision correction procedure whereby a thin flap of the cornea is
created allowing an Excimer laser to
sculpt the inside layers of the cornea. Over one million nearsighted
people including sports stars such as Tiger Woods and Wade Boggs and
people worldwide have reduced or eliminated their dependence on
glasses and contact lenses. In fact 98% of patients can drive
without glasses after Laser Vision Correction! LASIK is a procedure
for the treatment of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia
(farsightedness) and or astigmatism. LASIK is technology's most
advanced laser procedure. LASIK is the most accurate, rapid, and
painless vision correction method available. LASIK patients report
minimal discomfort and generally enjoy rapid visual recovery.
Following a LASIK procedure, most patients are able to resume most
of their normal activities the following day.
When you decide to undergo LASIK or other types of vision
correction, you want to know that the equipment being used on your
eyes is first class. Dr. David I. Malitz
believes that much of a surgeon’s responsibility to his patients
applying advanced technology in a safe and effective manner. To stay
on the cutting edge of LASIK laser
vision correction, Dr. Malitz constantly evaluates new technologies
that can offer the best treatment options for patients.
Dr. Malitz was born in Chicago and grew up in the Detroit area. He
graduated in the top 3% of his class with highest distinction from
one of the top ranked universities in the country, the University of
Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology-Zoology.
He was one of only several non-California residents accepted at the
prestigious UCLA School of Medicine where he graduated near the top
of his class. He studied Internal Medicine in preparation for his
residency at the University of Illinois Eye And Ear Infirmary in
Chicago. He is board certified and has been in private practice for
over 10 years and is the Medical Director of the Ohio Valley Eye
Institute. He is married to a talented woman, Michele, and has two
lovely daughters, Natalie and Erica and a son, Marc. He resides in

McGlothan Eye Institute
For most patients, a procedure called Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
may be the best way to achieve clear and more natural vision. This
procedure had its origins
back in the 1960s and has evolved over the years into a popular and
effective operation. In LASIK, an excimer laser is used to precisely
reshape the surface of the cornea. The excimer laser is a unique
type of cold laser that does not burn or cut tissue. Instead, it
gently breaks the molecular bonds between cells so that controlled
amounts of tissue can be literally vaporized away, one microscopic
layer at a time.
LASIK has become the procedure of choice - especially with patients
in high degrees of correction. The current technique involves both
the use of conventional and laser
surgeries to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and
astigmatism.
Dr. McGlothan's formal education and training are exemplary. After
obtaining a bachelor of science degree in molecular and
developmental biology from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
Washington, he earned his medical degree from the University of
Washington School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. McGlothan then completed
a residency in internal medicine at the reputable George Washington
University Medical School and an ophthalmology residency at Howard
University; both schools are based in Washington, D.C.
