Iowa laser vision correction
ASA uses the excimer laser to reshape the front surface of the
cornea to change its focusing power. Surface cells of the cornea
(the epithelium) are gently removed from the central portion of the
cornea, without creating a flap, to expose the region of the cornea
that is treated with the laser. The actual laser time is similar to
that with LASIK. The surface cells require two or more days to heal.
A soft contact lens is placed over the eye during this period to
serve as a bandage. ASA has been FDA approved for treatment of
near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism with the VISX Star
laser and long term safety and efficacy has been well established.
ASA has been very useful for eyes that have thin corneas as well as
those with corneal dystrophies, corneal irregularities or those who
have occupational safety needs. Many of our patients like the
concept of flap free surgery and choose this option.
We use the VISX Star ActiveTrak excimer laser system to treat
near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia) and
astigmatism. Dr. Husain has been specially
certified to use the VISX laser. VISX is the choice of more eye
doctors for their patients, and more people have been treated with
the VISX laser, which is FDA approved for LASIK and advanced surface
ablation (ASA). We also use CustomVue Wavefront technology to
provide our patients with individualized laser vision correction,
which is more precise than conventional laser treatment.
If you elect to have refractive surgery, several conditions are
necessary to maximize a good result. Your refractive error
(spectacle prescription) should not have changed
significantly over the previous year -- this ensures that your
correction is stable and that the treatment will be more precise.
Your eyes must be healthy without conditions
such as keratoconus (a progressive thinning of the cornea), or
corneal scars. Since the results of refractive surgery depend to a
large extent on normal healing, patients
should not have any eye disease (such as glaucoma or severe dry eye)
or medical illness (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) that may
interfere with recovery. Your
suitability for the procedure can be determined following a
complimentary screening and a personal consultation with Dr. Husain.
We appreciate that the decision regarding refractive surgery is very
personal and we believe that it should be made only after you are
fully informed about your options.

When considering vision correction, LASIK is not the only option and
may not be the right procedure for everyone. Depending on your
particular circumstances and
prescription, Epi-LASIK may better suit your visual needs.
Epi-LASIK is a procedure that uses the excimer laser to reshape the
front surface of the cornea. Epi-LASIK may be preferred for people
with thin corneas and those with a
very steep corneal shape. In addition, patients with preexisting dry
eyes may find Epi-LASIK a better choice as opposed to other laser
vision correction procedures because
it is less disruptive to the corneal nerves.
Epi-LASIK (Epithelial Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is an advanced
procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism. A device is used to push aside the outer most layer of
the cornea, called the epithelium, in one piece so that it can be
replaced once the excimer laser corrects your prescription. After
the laser
application, the surgeon replaces the “flap” of epithelium over the
corneal bed and places a soft bandage contact lens on the eye.
After Epi-LASIK, patients usually feel some discomfort and
experience blurred vision for three to five days as the surface
layer heals. Additionally, patients are normally
placed on a regimen of steroid eye drops for a two to four month
period, requiring monitoring by their doctor. Most patients resume
normal activities within a few days,
although it can take a few weeks to a few months for patients to
fully reach their optimal vision.

Wolfe Eye Clinic
There are a variety of important factors to consider when deciding
on a refractive surgeon. Experience and training should be two of
the most important considerations. For years, the physicians at
Wolfe Eye Clinic have been leaders in LASIK laser vision correction.
In fact, our physicians have been leaders in the development of
laser vision
correction and were the first to bring this technology to Iowa. They
have been performing refractive surgery since 1984. Our physicians
have been published in medical journals and textbooks and have
helped educate many other physicians in the field of laser vision
correction. And, many of our physicians have special fellowship
training. Wolfe Eye Clinic has a long history of advancing eye care
in Iowa and has continued in this tradition with refractive surgery.
LASIK surgery is a procedure designed to reduce or eliminate the
need for glasses or contacts. An excimer laser gently reshapes the
cornea with computer-controlled
precision to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism. At the beginning of the procedure, the patient is given
a mild sedative and the eye is anesthetized with eye drops.
Modern surgical techniques have made cataract removal one of the
safest and most successful surgeries today. The virtually painless
procedure takes about 10 minutes and is usually performed in a
hospital on an outpatient basis. The eye is anesthetized using
eyedrops, and a small incision (about one-eighth of an inch) is made
in the white of the eye or through the outer edge of the cornea. An
ultrasonic instrument is inserted and used to emulsify, or break up,
the cataract and then vacuum away the damaged material. After the
cataract has been removed, the surgeon inserts an intraocular lens
to replace the natural lens that was removed. The day after surgery
you will return for a checkup and your doctor may ask you to return
later for one or more follow-up examinations and vision tests. Most
patients notice an improvement in their vision during the first few
days after surgery.
