Dr Andrew M. Barrett of Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants is
pleased to announce the availability of Custom Vue Wavefront LASIK,
by VISX. FDA approved in 2003 for the correction of low to moderate
amounts of nearsightedness with or without astigmatism, Custom Vue
Wavefront LASIK has rapidly become the procedure of choice for those
who are eligible for this most advanced technology.
Using techniques developed by NASA scientists for use in
high-powered telescopes, a detailed analysis of an individual's eye,
known as a Wave Scan, can be obtained. This Wave Scan describes not
only the refractive power of the eye, but also the higher order
distortions and aberrations associated with an individual's vision.
A Wave Scan can be thought of as a 'fingerprint' of the eye. While
thousands of individuals may share the same prescription for glasses
or contact lenses, no two eyes share the
same 'fingerprint.'

LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a surgical
technique in which the surface cells of the cornea are "hinged" and
moved to one side. The excimer laser is then used to shape the
underlying tissue of the cornea to improve vision. After surgery,
the surface cells are put back in their original position.
LASIK can be used to treat, low, moderate, and high degrees of
nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Typically, both eyes
can be corrected the same day in our state-of-the-art Philadelphia,
New Jersey and Wilmington, Delaware LASIK facilities. Generally, our
Philadelphia, New Jersey and Wilmington LASIK patients experience
quick visual recovery and have no need for pain medication after
surgery.
WAVEfront-guided laser eye surgery, or Custom LASIK, is a customized
laser treatment that offers patients a chance to achieve 20/20
vision, or better. The main component of the WAVEfront system is a
device called an “aberrometer” that beams light through the eye and
takes thousands of detailed measurements as it bounces back out,
detecting imperfections in the visual system. The laser is then
guided by this map of the eye and reshapes it, generating a
customized treatment for each eye.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Aronsky

Institute in Maryland, where he was appointed Chief Resident of
Ophthalmology in 1997. Dr. Aronsky was awarded a one-year surgery
fellowship to study corneal and refractive eye surgery at the
renowned Case Western Reserve University and the University
Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Aronsky has performed thousands of LASIK
procedures and continues to perform the latest, most innovated
procedures by participating in many ongoing FDA protocols.
