Katzen Eye Group
LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is currently one of
the most frequently performed elective procedures in the United
States. It is a highly effective outpatient procedure used to
correct most ranges of nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism. The doctors at Katzen Eye Group continue to be leaders
in laser vision correction.
Once your treatment plan has been determined, you will be given a
surgery date. Typically, Katzen Eye Group performs LASIK procedures
on Fridays, allowing the patient to fully recuperate over the
weekend. You will be asked to arrive 20-30 minutes prior to your
surgery to allow time to review your consent form and to go over any
questions you may have. Numbing eye drops will be used to alleviate
any discomfort during the procedure. Then an eyelid holder will be
used to help keep you from blinking.
Dr. Katzen is a leading force in laser vision correction. As a
dedicated surgeon, he is devoted to the treatment of nearsightedness
and farsightedness. He has been acknowledged for achievements in
developing a specialized surgical instrument called the "Katzen Flap
Unzipper," commonly used with LASIK procedures throughout the United
States. In addition, he has donated his surgical expertise by
teaching and performing cataract surgery in Guyana, South America,
Cuba, Israel, the United States and Europe.
Dr. Katzen is recognized by his patients and colleagues as a leader
and innovator in cataract and implant surgery. He is on the
forefront of the latest technological advances, including multifocal
intraocular lenses (IOLs), which frequently permit one to see near,
far, and in between, without dependence upon glasses after cataract
surgery. Dr. Katzen is nationally recognized for his expertise in
correcting astigmatism (a condition in which one's eyes are not
perfectly spherical or round, resulting in less than adequate
vision). With his use of lasers, special high tech IOLs, and
innovative techniques, Dr. Katzen frequently corrects patients'
vision to better than they have ever seen — without glasses.

Kameen Eye Associates
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, more commonly referred to as
LASIK, is a two-phase procedure that gently reshapes the cornea of
the eye, allowing light to properly focus on the retina. By
reshaping the cornea, we are often able to decrease or completely
eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses. LASIK is an
outpatient procedure with very little recovery time associated with
it. Most patients are back to their normal activities within one to
three days.
The desired shape of the cornea is determined by extensive testing
and measurements that are calculated for your particular eyes.
Corneal thickness, topography, corneal shape, refractive stability
and severity and general eye health are just a few of the factors
that enter into this decision. This personalized information enables
Kameen Eye Associates to offer each of our patients a truly
customized LASIK treatment and allows us to choose the best laser
for your prescription.
Laser vision correction is a procedure that improves vision by using
a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea. LASIK is the
most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure and is an
effective treatment for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia)
and astigmatism.
Dr. Kameen’s vast clinical experience and impressive results have
earned him an international reputation for excellence, drawing
patients from around the world. He has been voted “Top Doctor” in
the field of Ophthalmology/Laser Vision Correction in both the
Baltimore and Washingtonian magazines and he has received the “Top
Doctor” award from both the VISX Corporation and the LVCI
Corporation as one of their most accomplished surgeons. Dr. Kameen
has also been awarded LVCI’s “Top Five” Award given to the top five
surgeons in the country. Additionally, Kameen Eye Associates has
received national recognition as one of the most technologically
advanced practices in the industry.

Maryland Cataract Surgery
LASIK surgery is an extremely successful vision correction procedure
approved for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness,
astigmatism, and in some cases, presbyopia correction. In the United
States alone, laser surgery is performed on more than a million
patients every year, and it is currently the most popular refractive
surgery available. If you are interested in laser vision correction,
consider what surgery can do for you.
Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a surgical treatment
designed to improve vision by increasing the focusing power of the
eye. It is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in less
than an hour. At our vision correction center, surgery begins after
the patient is made comfortable with numbing anesthetic eyedrops.
During the procedure, Dr. Rowen creates a flap in the outer eye, and
gently folds over the flap to reveal the cornea. Using a precise
excimer laser, she then quickly reshapes the cornea and replaces the
flap over the eye. The surgery itself is virtually painless, and
results can be seen immediately. After LASIK vision correction ,
patients can leave our office immediately and return to their normal
activities within a day, sometimes even sooner.
The surgery is best suited for healthy patients who are at least 18
years of age. If you suffer from astigmatism, myopia
(nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), and your
prescription is stable, you may be a candidate for LASIK vision
correction. At our practice, the surgery is the procedure of choice
for patients with lower prescriptions. The surgery is worthwhile for
anyone who is unhappy wearing glasses or contact lenses. The surgery
may now also be an option for presbyopia correction; the surgery can
correct one eye for distance vision and the other eye for close
vision in a procedure known as m onovision.
Dr. Sheri Rowen is a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology, with a
reputation for quality eye care. Dr. Rowen has been recognized for
her expertise. She currently offers eye surgery at her practice,
along with new procedures that can now correct distance and near
vision using the advanced technology. She also features a variety of
cosmetic and skin care services. Dr. Sheri Rowen is well known for
her expertise as a Baltimore LASIK Surgeon. She is also a highly
skilled Maryland Cataract surgeon who has helped many thousands of
patients regain vision after developing cataracts. She specializes
in the newest technology implants, and is a Baltimore ReSTOR, ReZOOM
and Crystalens specialist.

CustomVue Lasik uses the same laser to treat your eye. The
difference is that the standard numbers for refractive error are no
longer used to program the laser. This is where WaveScan technology
comes in. The WaveScan technology identifies and measures the
microscopic imperfections in your eye (your eye’s fingerprint). This
data is then used to generate a customized treatment for your eye.
The WaveScan digital information is transferred to the laser. The
VISX S4 CustomVue laser treatment will correct these imperfections
as well as the standard refractive errors of your eye. This custom
designed treatment has the potential to enable you to have better
vision than you previously did with glasses. CustomVue Lasik takes
conventional Lasik correction to a higher level.
Laser in-SItu Keratomileusis (LASIK) can be used to treat low to
high levels of nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism with the
goal of reducing or eliminating dependence on corrective lenses.
Nearsightedness occurs when the cornea is too curved or the eye is
too long. This causes light to focus in front of the retina, rather
than on the retina, resulting in blurry distance vision. LASIK uses
the computer-controlled precision of the Excimer laser to treat the
inner tissue of the cornea.
The procedure is done using eye drop anesthesia, and while you may
feel pressure, the technique is generally not painful. First, an
instrument known as a microkeratome makes a protective flap in the
outer layer of the cornea, at about twenty-five percent of its depth
from the surface. Next, the Excimer laser sculpts the internal
corneal tissue to the correct refractive power by flattening the
curvature of the exposed corneal tissue. The "flatter" cornea allows
light rays to focus more directly on the retina, thereby reducing
nearsightedness. After a few minutes of drying, the corneal flap is
laid back in its original position. Due to the cornea's
extraordinary natural bonding qualities, stitches are usually not
required.
Dr. Andrew Kessler is an American Board of Ophthalmology certified
ophthalmologist who has been practicing comprehensive ophthalmology
for over 16 years in Carroll County, Maryland. He routinely performs
refractive surgery, along with ophthalmic surgery for many eye
diseases including cataract, glaucoma, diabetes, and strabismus. He
has performed surgery on several doctors in Carroll County. He has
become the eye surgeon whom other doctors trust.
