Imagine waking up to see the world with crisp, brilliant clarity with less dependence on glasses or contact lenses. With life changing LASIK, you’ll be able to play sports, swim and enjoy social activities with greater confidence for years to come.

Before the LASIK procedure, the Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix™ system is used to map thousands of data points – giving the McDonald Eye Associates team a fully detailed, three-dimensional picture of your eye’s shape and characteristics. This information is then translated from the diagnostic process into a personalized laser treatment plan for each eye.

The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes per eye. Most people get back to their normal routine quickly - even going back to work the day after surgery.

One to two weeks prior to surgery, your McDonald Eye Associates surgeon will use a laser to make a small opening within your eye that allows fluid to pass between the eye’s lens and the front of the eye. This will not affect your vision.

The procedure itself is brief and painless, much like LASIK. It takes about 15 minutes and is performed while you remain awake and relaxed (you may be given a mild sedative to alleviate nervousness).

LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is the most popular of current laser vision correction procedures. It is designed to lessen your dependence on corrective lenses if you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism. Performed in the comfort of our office, it takes just a few minutes per eye and is relatively painless.

The cornea is like the lens of a camera. It focuses light rays on the retina at the back of your eye to produce the images you see. When the cornea is not perfectly shaped, the images you see are blurred. The Excimer laser system (LASIK) sculpts the cornea into the correct curvature. In nearsightedness, images are focused in front of the retina. It is corrected by flattening the cornea. In farsightedness, images are focused behind the retina. It is corrected by increasing the curvature of the cornea. In astigmatism, the cornea has an irregular curvature. It is corrected by evening the curvature.

Laser Vision Correction

Dr. Brown has been performing refractive surgery since 1992 and has continually advanced his skills in this exciting area. From 1992 to 1996 he performed over 1,000 radial keratotomies and astigmatic keratotomies. When the excimer laser became available in 1995, Dr. Brown was among the first surgeons in Arkansas to use this more precise method of refractive surgery to improve distance vision in nearsighted patients. In 1999, after successfully operating on 1,200 eyes with PRK, he trained under Dr. Daniel Durrie of Kansas City, a national leader in refractive surgery, and learned the LASIK procedure. Desiring to know what it was like to be a refractive patient, Dr. Brown had the LASIK procedure himself, and has 20/20 vision without glasses.

LASIK is a safe, reliable and painless way to improve vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. LASIK, which stands for laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a form of refractive surgery that changes the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that it focuses properly on the retina in the back of the eye and objects can be seen clearly. The procedure is effective for many patients with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

During the procedure, a device called a microkeratome creates a flap in the outer layer of the cornea. Patients are given topical anesthesia and a mild sedative so they are awake but calm and cannot feel discomfort. The corneal flap is lifted and an excimer laser beam adjusts corneal curvature so objects no longer appear blurry. The cornea is steepened for hyperopic patients, flattened for myopic patients, and made more spherical for patients with astigmatism. The flap is then closed.
