It is imperative for every patient and refractive surgeon to achieve
faultless vision correction with just one refractive surgery
procedure. Unfortunately, like any other surgery, it is difficult to
foresee results of the surgery. Things gone off beam during the
pre-surgical examination or during the surgery itself may
necessitate Lasik enhancement. Sometimes, Lasik enhancement is done
even if you expect good results following a Lasik surgery, to
achieve crystal clear vision. However, only your doctors can only
decide whether or not you require a lasik enhancement. This is
because each case has a unique combination of variables that can
affect visual outcomes.
There are a number of factors that affect your fulfilment after
Lasik surgery:
• The health of your corneas – your corneas should be thick and in a
healthy condition before Lasik surgery.
• Your age – 21 yrs and above is the prescribed age for the patients
having Lasik surgery.
• The type of refractive error you have- that is whether you are
nearsighted or farsighted or have astigmatism.
• Your expectations – some patients expect to have clear vision
immediately after the surgery, which is not always true. Results may
vary from person to person.
Need for Lasik enhancement:
Even though it is important that you should be able to see much
better without glasses the day after the surgery, it is not abnormal
for vision to fluctuate for almost three weeks. Your doctor will
observe your vision for several weeks. If you still feel
uncomfortable while driving or performing other visual tasks after
lasik, be sure to tell your doctor. You may need an enhancement if
your vision is noticeably unclear for three months after the
surgery.
Lasik enhancement procedure:
Lasik enhancement is nearly similar to primary Lasik procedure,
expect for one characteristic. The surgeon performing a lasik
enhancement uses specialised tools to create a corneal flap, instead
of using a microkeratome or laser. The flap is re-lifted and
typically takes only one or two minutes to reshape the cornea with
an excimer laser. Since only minimal corneal reshaping is necessary,
lasik enhancement procedure takes just a few minutes. It is
essential to follow your doctor’s instructions to reduce the risk of
eye infection and increase a good visual outcome.
Patients could well do without an enhancement surgery in case of
minor undercorrections or overcorrections. Such minor refractive
errors can be corrected through a technique called CLAPIKS (Contact
Lens Assisted Pharmacologically Induced Kerato Steeping). The
technique uses Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses to reshape the
cornea. Some major refractive errors like Hyperopia are more
difficult to correct than myopia, and astigmatism. Therefore, a
hyperopic patient is more likely to require an enhancement surgery
or Lasik enhancement if your initial eye surgery was lasik. Usually,
in Lasik enhancement cases, only one procedure is necessary to
reinstate vision to a satisfactory level. However, in difficult
cases, more than one enhancement may be required.
