Lasik procedure has grown in recent years because of a firm success
rate involving safest, most effective and predictable types of
surgery one can have today. However, there are complications that
patients should be aware of and fully understand before choosing to
have Lasik surgery. Lasik complications occur rarely, and most of
them can be successfully managed by your eye doctor. Some of the
complications involve:
.
Damage to the flap :
During lasik eye surgery, the entire flap is opened, instead of
creating a hinged flap of tissue on the central cornea. The flap is
then replaced after the laser treatment. However, there is a risk
that the flap could be impaired or dislocated.
Hazy flap
The corneal flap could create an abnormal corneal shape, due to the
unexpected healing, resulting in a decrease of best corrected
vision.
Post surgical undercorrection and overcorrection
Undercorrection is more common in Lasik, than overcorrection. A
slight undercorrection may actually be wanted following a
nearsighted treatment in patients over 40, to help with reading
vision. An initial overcorrection may occur depending on your
specific treatment, which usually corrects itself in the first month
or so. An overcorrection will make you temporarily nearsighted,
making your distance vision somewhat blurry and your near vision
rather good. These temporary undercorrections and overcorrections
are satisfactory for most patients, but can be made more comfortable
if they are advised to use necessary glasses or temporary contact
lenses until they resolve..
Night vision difficulties :
Reports reveal that there has been a
negative impact on night vision of patients undergoing Lasik
surgery.
Induced Astigmatism
Lasik complications occur as astigmatism can be induced following
LASIK. The post-operative vision becomes blurry. Small degrees of
astigmatism are well tolerated and can even enhance vision in some
circumstances. However, your vision does not meet your expectations
and stops you from doing specific things by increasing dependence on
glasses or contact lenses.
Corneal Abrasion
Corneal abrasion can be developed during a Lasik surgery resulting
in Lasik complications. This can happen even with excellent surgical
techniques and a moistened eye. The possibility of a small breakdown
in the epithelial surface may develop in a small percentage of LASIK
procedures because in some eyes the surface cells may not hold well.
Degeneration
Degeneration refers to the tendency of the eye to drift back
slightly toward its original prescription. This occurs more commonly
in patients with higher amounts of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
who have undergone LASIK.
Severe Inflammation
Although inflammation is the most feared Lasik complication, it is
extremely rare. As with any surgery, inflammation is avoided through
proper surgical technique. However, if it occurs, it clears itself
in the first 48 to 72 hours after treatment. That is why it is
important to avoid any contact with substances such as eye makeup,
hot tubs, and swimming pool water that may cause infection.
